Arts Participation as a Context for Youth Purpose

 The Arts were found in this study to be a way for adolescents to develop the capacity to connect with others through self-expression; to relate through sharing ideas, emotions, and observations of the world; and to build community through personally meaningful interaction. Our participants demonstrated the important role the Arts play in perpetuating meaningful human connection in our culture, reinforcing the need for youth to have every opportunity to pursue purpose in an art form that they love.

The QUESTION CLASS

Students have deep and meaningful conversations with their peers. The questions push students out of their comfort zone, while the lessons provide structure for conversations that would otherwise be difficult for students to start and maintain.

How Supportive Do Youth Believe Their Family/Friends Are?

Nonprofit organizations and community groups similarly provided an
integrated network of support. Many purposeful youth took advantage of
volunteer experiences that developed empathic reactions to the misfortunes
of others, future goals, new pathways for further opportunities to act, and
encouragement through positive feedback from those helped: “It’s that
emotional attachment as well as just the feeling that you get from actually
helping someone, to me, is like the best feeling I’ve ever had. And that’s
why I decided to go into children’s psychology.” Thus, youth who engaged in community service found multiple layers of support for their beyond-
the-self inclinations.
